Riding for Life 2003

What is Riding For Life?

Held every two years, Riding for Life is a cycling adventure from Malaysia to Singapore to raise awareness and funds for AIDS prevention and for people living with HIV/AIDS. The money raised supports prevention education programmes as well as critical medication and care.

Riding for Life 2003 will bring together, for the first time, Action for AIDS (AfA) and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) in a common effort to raise funds against HIV/AIDS. Funds raised by each organization in this unique joint effort will be used to fund their respective programmes in Singapore and Malaysia.

Flagging off in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, 1 June 2003, riders will cycle some 900km crisscrossing the Malaysian peninsula to finish in Singapore on Sunday, 8 June.

Who Are You?

You are the people who care: cyclists, support crew, volunteers and donors.

Who Are You Helping?

In Malaysia and Singapore, the number of new cases of HIV and AIDS continues to increase every year. AIDS can happen to anyone, even babies. And it doesn't just affect the people who have it, but everyone close to them.

Funds raised by Riding for Life 2003 will go towards:

  • prevention through education and
  • financial assistance for people with HIV/AIDS to afford needed medication.

Today, we have no cure for AIDS. Up-to-date treatments can prolong and improve the quality of life. However, they are expensive.

As there is no cure, the only way to stop HIV/AIDS is to prevent infection, through on-going education and lifestyle changes.

How Far Will You Go In The Fight Against AIDS?

First, you must decide you are committed to fighting AIDS. Then, you can decide how you would like to participate in Riding for Life 2003 cycle, join the support crew on the ride, volunteer to help with the flag off and welcome rally events, or you can give or help raise money.

Whatever your decision, Riding for Life 2003 will require COMMITMENT!

Riders need to: raise S$2,000 in pledges and get in shape for the long-distance ride.

As all the pledges go toward AIDS prevention and helping people living with AIDS and not to fund expenses, riders will be required to pay their trip expenses, as well as provide their own bicycle and safety gear. However, if you raise S$5,000 or more, AfA will waive your trip expense.

Getting into shape isn't easy, so training starts on World's AIDS Day, Sunday, 1 December 2002.

To get information on the ride call the AfA office at 6254-0212 or send an e-mail to RfL Chairman, George Bishop at swkgb@nus.edu.sg.

If you don't have the time to be on the ride, you can volunteer for the Flag-off in KL or the Welcome Rally in Singapore. Riding for Life 2003 needs road marshalls, escort cyclists, and other enthusiastic helpers. People with HIV/AIDS need to know you care.
