'We can do no great things; only small things with great love'
How apt and wise is this quote by Mother Teresa in the context of this year’s conference – ‘Affected But Not Alone’. Everyone attending this 4th Singapore AIDS conference is already giving a part of ourselves to the HIV/AIDS cause. Our presence at this meeting is an indication that HIV-infected individuals are indeed not alone.
We are honoured to have Dr. Balaji Sadasivan, Senior Minister of State (Information, Communications and the Arts & Health) as the Guest-of-Honour at the opening ceremony. Professor Shao Yiming will be the keynote speaker. He is the Chief Expert, National Centre for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention in China and Director, Department of Research and Virology and Immunology, Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, China.
The conference will have 3 plenary sessions and 7 symposiums. It caters to a multi-sectorial audience, i.e., government and non-governmental organizations, health workers, counsellors, community groups and workers, youths, volunteers, social scientists, the business sector, activists and persons infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS in Singapore.
This year, we have included something new and exciting to give that ‘zing’ to this conference. We will be involving our youths from the junior colleges, who will be tomorrow’s caregivers, policy makers and volunteers, in an active debate. We hope this would stir the minds of our youths to ponder over the issues of HIV/AIDS and take home the prevention message to other youths they encounter.
We would like to encourage your active participation at this conference and sincerely believe that you would leave imbued with a better understanding of HIV/AIDS. You would have broadened your knowledge of the medical, social and spiritual issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS. We are convinced that by the end of this conference, we would have kindled that burning flame within you to further your commitment to AIDS prevention, care and research.
Have a wonderful and rewarding time at this conference!
