Anti-AIDS group reveals children in Asia are becoming resistance to AIDS drugs. Require improved medicine.
Teenagers in Asia receiving treatment for HIV are showing early signs of osteoporosis and children as young as five are becoming resistant to AIDS drugs, an anti-AIDS group said yesterday, urging for more attention to be given to young HIV patients.
The findings, made available on World AIDS day, is a reminder that while more people in Asia now have access to basic AIDS drugs, improved medicines remain out of reach and patients - both adults and children - still suffer from inadequate care.

She was infected with the virus which causes AIDS while in her mother's womb.
On the surface, the lively and intelligent Primary 4 pupil - who speaks fluent Mandarin, English and Bahasa Indonesia - seems to be coping well.
A little probing, however, reveals her vulnerabilities. She looks away and hides her face in a soft toy when asked if having the virus makes her sad.
According to Ministry of Health statistics, she is one of 32 Singapore residents below the age of 14 who are HIV-positive.
Miss Ho, principal social worker of TTSH says "She represents the past because she was infected though vertical transmission (from mother to child), which is preventable. If her mother had tested early and taken treatment, this girl might not have become part of the HIV statistic."

The number of deaths among HIV patients is showing no signs of decline, and this could be linked to the increasing number of elderly patients with the virus and late detection of the disease.
Associate professor Leo Yee Sin, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), said yesterdayL "We believe that, perhaps, late presentation... the more elderly perople which are coming in late with other forms of comorbidities could have added on to the complexity of he clinical management."

A new strain of the HIV virus, believed to be more aggressive than at least one strain here, has reared its head.
Researchers from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) believe the new strain developed from recombination of the two existing strains here, and that it may ave arisen amoung the community of bisexual HIV-positive patients. By "more aggresive", researchers mean that patients with the virus, which causes the incurable Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS, could become very ill much sooner.
