SINGAPOREANS TO OBSERVE AIDS CANDLELIGHT MEMORIAL INDOORS

SINGAPORE, 14 May 2007 – Singaporeans will be among the millions of people throughout the world who will gather to observe the International AIDS candlelight Memorial on Sunday, May 20 2006.

This competition is one of AfA’s key events in their calendar of outreach and educational events. Art Against AIDS uses art to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and encourages community participation in HIV/AIDS prevention in Singapore – particularly among the youth.

Locally, Action for AIDS, Singapore (AfA) with various partners has organised the Singapore AIDS candlelight Memorial for the past 14 years and has traditionally held the event in open areas such as Bras Basah Park, Youth Park, Tampines MRT Open Area and the Botanical Gardens.

Instead of holding the memorial in an open area, AfA along with co-organiser First Hand have chosen to move the commemoration indoors for the first time with the generous support of the Singapore Management University.

“By bringing the Singapore AIDS candlelight Memorial indoors, we hope to create a more conducive environment for volunteers, patients, families and friends of those who have passed on to share their grief and to find strength in each others company, ” said Mr Lionel Lee, Executive Director of Action for AIDS and Member of the Singapore AIDS Memorial Organising Committee.

“While this event is intended to remember those who have passed on from HIV/AIDS and to show our support for those who are living with the disease, it is also a powerful education and awareness invoking tool.”

The Singapore AIDS candlelight Memorial Organising Committee would like to invite members of the media to attend the Memorial Service on Sunday 20 May 2007, 1900H at the SMU Conference Hall, Level 2, School of Accountancy and School of Law. SMU is located at 60, Stamford Road Singapore 178900.

Interview opportunities will be possible with members of the Organising Committee and Event Supporters. Discretion is advised for video recording and photo taking.
