Code of Conduct for Volunteers

As an Action for AIDS volunteer, I undertake to follow the Code of Conduct to the best of my ability:

  1. I will hold all information pertaining to HIV-positive individuals and other sensitive information in relation to the organization and the communities we work with in the strictest confidence.
  2. I will not discriminate against HIV-positive individuals in any way through my actions and words.
  3. I will treat all individuals that I interact with in my capacity as an AfA volunteer with respect, regardless of their background.
  4. I will not impose my religious and other personal beliefs and values on individuals I interact with in my capacity as an AfA volunteer.
  5. I will not use my involvement as an AfA volunteer to further my financial interests or career.
  6. I will conduct myself in an appropriate and professional manner, and will specifically not engage in any romantic or sexual relationship with clients I interact with in my capacity as an AfA volunteer.
  7. I will endeavour to provide accurate and reliable information in relation to HIV/AIDS, and to avoid giving information that I am not certain about.
  8. I will offer comprehensive information and advice about risk reduction, including condom usage, if asked for such information.
  9. I will not communicate with the media on issues pertaining to Action for AIDS without first informing and getting clearance from the appropriate Executive Committee or staff member.
  10. I will not engage in unsafe sexual practices or other high risk behaviour so as to protect myself, my partners and the reputation of the organization.
